Agricultural and Industrial Museum
A memorable, hands-on overview of York County’s industrial legacy. The whole family will be surprised and delighted. The Agricultural and Industrial Museum of the York County Heritage Trust celebrates the contributions of York County’s farming and manufacturing communities, as well as the diverse range of products that helped York earn its reputation as one of the country’s leading agricultural and industrial centers. A collection of York County-built autos, a running water-powered grain mill, and a working 20-foot tall ammonia compressor are among the exhibits. The three elements of the environment are air, land, and water. It permits visitors to closely inspect York-built autos, an original Conestoga Wagon, and a 1937 Aeronca K aircraft. The Agricultural & Industrial Museum, which is two different museums, has hundreds of intriguing exhibits that highlight their themes’ importance in the evolution of York County and the country. The Agricultural Museum is situated in the Old Eastern Market building, as befits its name and purpose. Built in 1889 as a farmer’s market, it was converted into a farm equipment warehouse by Sears and Roebuck in 1947. In a 13,000 square foot exhibition space, the Museum now has 20 distinct exhibits. Banking Artifacts, Potato Farming Showcases, Shingle Mill, Plowing and Cultivating, Machine Shop, A.B. Farquhar Major, Cigar Manufacture, Transportation Displays include a 1920 Buick (with only 5,422 original miles) and a 1926 GMC moving truck, York Automobiles, with four cars on display including a 1906 Mayflower Huckster, a 1919 Ford Model T, a 1909 Pullman touring car, and a 1916 Pullman Junior. Other exhibitions focus on various areas of farming and marketing and include real-world artifacts such as wagons, equipment, and cars. These are not models. The Museum has a Gift Shop, a Meeting Room that may be booked, and two Children’s Areas — a play area and a garden — in addition to the display area. More than a mile away, the Industrial Museum is a developing, multi-building complex containing hands-on exhibitions of industrial relics from the early 19th century to the present. The museum includes: Physical Fitness showcases Hoffman’s weight-lifting empire, Pottery, Locomotive have full-size 1892 model of Phineas Davis’ coal-fired 1831 locomotive, Wire Cloth Exhibits, Casket Manufacturing, Wall Covering, Machine Shop, Railroad, Defense, Gristmill, Music, Auto Body Manufacturing, Innovative Technology, Printing, and Telephone.
