East York

East York is located in York County and is considered one of Pennsylvania’s greatest places to live. Inhabitants of East York enjoy a thick suburban atmosphere, with the majority of residents owning their houses. There are several restaurants, coffee shops, and parks in East York. East York is home to a large number of young professionals and retirees, as well as conservative inhabitants. East York’s public schools are well regarded. East York is an unincorporated community in Springettsbury Township, just outside of York City boundaries. In East York you can find the East York Historic District. The district includes 262 contributing buildings in the residential community of East York. The community was laid out in 1903, but the houses were primarily built in the 1930s and 1940s. The community includes notable examples of Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Prairie School-style dwellings. The district also includes the former school (1912), a three-story Art Deco-style apartment building (1936), and Advent Church. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The development is bisected by East Market Street (the Lincoln Highway), the primary artery in and out of York, and is flanked by I-83, on the north by industrial development, on the west by commercial development, and the south by post-World War II suburban construction. The district is 10 blocks long and set out in a grid layout, extending two blocks north and one block south of East Market Street. It has 308 resources. This main highway is flanked by the biggest lots and most notable residences. The side streets are lined with lots of all sizes, each with a different style of dwelling. At the time of its construction, this complex was mainly residential, however, some homes have since been converted to commercial use. The only three structures that were not single-family houses were a school, a church, and an apartment building. Colonial Revival, Tudor, Prairie, Craftsman, and French Eclectic are the most popular styles. The majority of these types are represented in each block and come in a range of materials such as brick, stone, frame, and stucco. On practically every property, detached garages (not included in the resource count) are built in the same style and with the same materials as the home. Sidewalks, tree-lined streets, and landscaped lots were features of this development, which began in 1903 and peaked in the 1930s and 1940s, but continued to grow well into the 1960s, as demonstrated by the 46 non-contributing resources beyond the era of significance. The district maintains its credibility. There have been minimal changes to the residences in the region, and the landscape elements, which are now mature, complement the location. Many of the streets now have canopies of trees, giving the neighborhood a strong sense of belonging.
