Penn Market
Penn Market is York’s oldest farmers market, having opened in 1866 on the corner of Market and Penn Streets at 380 West Market St. Penn Market’s focus is on providing fresh goods to the community. Penn Market, also known as Market and Penn Street Farmers’ Market, is a historic public market that was established in 1876 and enlarged in the 1890s. The original part is a gable-roofed brick structure that is 60 feet wide and 80 feet long. In the enlargement, a 40-foot wide rectangular component was constructed, and the two parts were connected by a single, moderately pitched gable roof. A five-bay broad front was constructed as part of the enlargement to unify the structure. Two decorative circular windows adorn the front façade. Three accessory structures, including a Queen Anne-style stable, are attached to the main building. Previously, the Market was owned and operated by the sellers, many of whom were third-generation or older. The Redevelopment Authority of the City of York (RDA) bought the market and aims to renovate the 150-year-old edifice to keep it open for another 150 years as a source of fresh vegetables, meats, and other goods in York. Penn Market is open all year and has off-street parking. Local butchers provide a plethora of fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables during the growing season, as well as fresh locally grown meats and poultry items. Other stalls are providing freshly prepared delicacies produced from materials obtained from other market sellers. Several vendors provide samples as well as made-to-order breakfast and lunch options.
Over time, the market has transitioned from being primarily a food store to more of a flea market for products. Penn Market features a larger assortment of fruits and vegetables. It has a farmer’s market feel about it. Cheap, homegrown food, local meat, and also adore getting a bunch of fresh-cut flowers here for a fraction of the cost of a grocery store arrangement. Hot cuisine and baked goods are also available. Stop by for lunch and to pick up meat and veggies for healthy cooking to show your support for local farmers. The oldest continuously functioning farmers market in York, Penn Market, is open all year. 380 West Market St is located at the intersection of Market and Penn Streets and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Throughout the year, the Market will offer special events with hours relevant to the occasion. Stop on in and you’ll be sure to discover a fresh nutritious treat for you and your loved ones, with a range of fresh fruits, veggies, meats, and cheeses right from the farm to your table.
